Method 4: Restore / Reset Software Distribution & Catroot2 folders.

Step 1: Press Windows key + X

Step 2: Open Command Prompt as Admin

Step 3: Enter the following commands one by one, hitting Enter each time. This is done to first stop all current windows updates in progress.

  • net stop wuauserv
  • net stop bits
  • net stop cryptSvc
  • net stop msiserver

Step 4: Type the following two commands hitting Enter key each time. This is done to rename these two directories.

ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old

Step 5: Now begin the Windows update by executing the following commands in the Command prompt window. Hit Enter after each command. This will restart the Windows Update Services.

  • net start wuauserv
  • net start bits
  • net start cryptSvc
  • net start msiserver
  • pause

Step 6: Reboot your computer. The Windows update issue should now be fixed and you will be able to check for windows update and update your system.
