“Unidentified network” is a common error encountered in Windows 10 when trying to establish a connection to a network. Go through the fixes mentioned below, implement them in any order you like and stop when you find your issue is resolved!
How to Fix Unidentified Network in Windows 10
Try any of the following measures to resolve “Unidentified Network Error” in your Windows computer.
1. Disable Airplane Mode
Flight Mode or airplane mode as you call it; it can disconnect you from all networks including the internet! Go to Settings > Home > Network & Internet > Airplane Mode. Turn it OFF if it is ON.
You can also achieve this by clicking the Network icon on the taskbar. Once you click, if you find the Airplane mode, tap on it to switch it OFF.
2. Update Your Network Card Drivers
Go to Settings > Update and Security > View Additional Update. Click on it and install if there is any update pending. You must now restart the machine.
Else you can choose to download from an OEM website. Go to Device Manager > Network Adaptor. Now select any Adaptor and right click to reach Properties. Go to Driver and note the current “Driver Version”. Compare it to the latest version for the same adaptor on the Ethernet Adaptors or Wi-Fi Adaptor OEM website. Ensure you have the latest version.
Also, you can check with the router team, if the router needs an update on the firmware.
3. Disable Security software for some time
Your Antivirus or Firewall (or a recent upgrade to these), might be the culprit. Disable them to check if the network unidentified error is resolved.
- VPN can be disabled
- Windows Firewall can be restored to default
- Any new security software or antivirus can be disabled
4. Disable Fast startup feature
The latest versions of Windows have a Fast Startup mode, which sometimes interferes with network access and causes the unidentified network error to show up. Disable to see it if resolves. Go to Power Options > Choose what the power button does > Click on ‘Change settings that are currently unavailable’ > Uncheck ‘Turn on fast startup’ > Reboot.
Else just perform a simple restart on the modem and router before you do the above. See if it works!
5. Switch DNS servers
Go to Network Connections > Right Click Ethernet or Wi-Fi > Properties > Internet Protocol Version 4. Set the Preferred DNS server to 8.8.8.8 and Alternate DNS server to 8.8.4.4
6. Run these Commands
Go to Command Prompt window with Admin Rights. Run these commands one by one, and reboot your computer once completed.

netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
netsh int tcp set heuristics disabled
netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

7. Run Network Diagnosis
Go to built-in network troubleshooter for Windows 10. Go for a full check, or check only for some specific network adaptor.
8. Change Ethernet Cable
Replace an ageing ethernet cable, or bypass the Wi-Fi adaptor by connecting directly to diagnose the Unidentified Network problem. Else you can try an external adaptor.
9. Set A Static IP Address
So, if your router cannot connect to a dynamic IP address, change to a static IP address.
To do this, just go to Network Connections, right click on (Ethernet or Wi-Fi) and click on Properties. Double click Internet Protocol Version 4. Select radial for ‘Use the following IP address’. Switch your IP address settings as others on the same network. Save and Exit.
